Small Business Web Design

A clear, fast website that works on phones and turns visitors into calls and enquiries.

Most people will first see your business on their phone, in a hurry. The website is built so they can see what you do, trust you, and get in touch in a few seconds, and so Google can understand what each page is about.

This works the same way for businesses across the Thames Valley, including nearby in Guildford, Basingstoke and Reading, and everywhere in between.

Best for

Businesses with no website, or one that is slow, dated or hard to use on a phone.

What's included

  • Design and build of the site, phone first
  • Pages for each service and each area served
  • Easy calling and enquiry buttons on every page
  • Fast loading, and the basic search set-up done properly (page titles, headings, background information for Google)

This is a draft scope. Say what you need and it can be tailored to your business.

How I work

  1. 1A conversation about your business first, not a template picker: what you do, who searches for it, and what's made previous websites, if any, fall short.
  2. 2A plain-English plan for the pages you actually need, built around the services and areas you serve, before any design work starts.
  3. 3The build itself, phone first, with the basic technical groundwork done properly so Google can read the site.
  4. 4A walk-through once it's ready, in plain terms, and a clear answer about who updates it afterwards, you or me.

Problems I see most often

Your current website looks fine on a laptop but is awkward or slow on a phone, where most visitors actually are.

The site gets rebuilt phone first from the start, not adapted afterwards, so the experience that matters most is the one that's actually designed for.

You paid for a website years ago and have no idea how to change so much as an opening time.

Before the build starts, we agree who makes changes afterwards, you or me, so this doesn't happen again.

Visitors land on the site and leave without calling, even though the design looks smart.

A good-looking site that buries the phone number or makes people hunt for what you actually do loses enquiries. Every page is built around a clear, fast way to get in touch.

A note on timing

A tired or slow website costs the most in the busiest months, when people are comparing several businesses quickly on their phone before choosing one. Getting it fixed before your busy season starts matters more than fixing it partway through.

Website Design FAQs

Why does it matter if my website is slow on a phone?

Most visitors will be on a phone, often while comparing a few businesses at once. A page that takes several seconds to load loses people before they even see what you offer, and Google also uses loading speed as part of how it ranks pages. A fast, phone-first site keeps more of the people who click through, and gives Google fewer reasons to rank you below a quicker competitor.

Do I need to know anything technical to have a website built?

No. You know your business and your customers; that is the input that matters. The technical build, hosting and basic search set-up are handled for you. You will be asked plain questions about what you do, who you serve and what makes you different, and the answers get turned into the pages.

Can I update the website myself once it is built?

That depends on how the site is set up, and is worth agreeing before the build starts. Some small businesses are happy to have changes made for them when something needs updating. Others want to edit text or photos themselves. Say which you would prefer, and the site can be built to suit.

Will a new website help my Google ranking on its own?

A well-built website removes technical reasons Google might ignore or rank a page poorly, such as slow loading or missing information, and gives customers somewhere solid to land. It is not a replacement for local SEO work such as your Google Business Profile and area pages. The two are meant to work together, not one instead of the other.

How long does a small business website take to build?

It depends on the number of pages and how quickly content and photos are agreed, so I won't put a single figure on it before discussing your business specifically. What I will say plainly is the timeline before any work starts, not after.

Do I need to write the words for the website myself?

No. You know your business better than anyone, so I'll ask plain questions about what you do and who for, and turn the answers into the actual page copy. You review and approve it before it goes live.
