What Is Local SEO? A Plain-English Guide for Small Business Owners

Local SEO is not a mystery, and it is not the same as normal SEO. Here is what it actually means for a small business, without the jargon.

The plain-English version

Local SEO is the work that helps your business show up when people nearby search Google for what you do, whether that is in the normal list of results or in the map results at the top of the page.

It matters because most people never scroll past the first few results. If your business is not one of them for the searches that matter in your town, the customer finds someone else instead, usually without ever knowing you existed.

How it is different from normal SEO

Normal SEO tries to help a website rank for searches from anywhere. Local SEO narrows that down to searches with a local intent, whether or not the word "near me" is actually typed.

It leans more heavily on things normal SEO does not need to worry about as much: your Google Business Profile, your business name, address and phone number matching everywhere online, and having genuine local relevance, such as pages for the specific towns you serve.

What actually affects local search results

Google has said publicly that local results are ranked on three things: relevance (does this business match what was searched), distance (how close is it to the person searching, or to the area they searched), and prominence (how well-known and well-reviewed is it).

That is why a business with brilliant SEO but very few reviews can still lose out to a less polished competitor with fifty genuine reviews and a complete profile. Local SEO covers all three factors, not just one.

Where to start

A complete, accurate Google Business Profile is usually the highest-impact starting point, because it directly affects the map results most local searches surface first. After that, a website with a proper page for each service and each area served, and a steady flow of genuine reviews, do most of the remaining work.
